Life in the Clouds [ publication design ] 2024
Life in the Clouds is a publication that documents the lives of ethnic communities in Dong Van, Ha Giang, where the rugged landscape has become a defining part of their identity. The project celebrates the stories of the land and its people through a physical print book that evokes the region’s atmosphere through texture, material, and layered pacing.
[ typographic system ]The typographic system takes cues from the way local people form their communities in the mountains. The stepped logic of the rice terraces, created for agriculture, directly shaped the project’s typographic structure and layout.
[ material exploration ]The stacked typography is enhanced with gradient, subtle motion, and material choices. Translucent vellum and layered textures let text and images fade in and out, echoing the mist that softens the mountain landscape.
For Life in the Clouds, I wanted the book to feel like a quiet journey through Ha Giang. Through texture, pacing, and material presence, each turn of the page gives readers a small sense of what it feels like to be there.
